Eve

Green eyes won’t do; her skin is blue.
Your paintbrush says it best
Picasso-like
slicing rearranging parts
It settles on The Eye
downcast half-covered by
a sapphire lid
glinting in an almost-wink
It settles on the Apple Core
a gash of green will do for that
dropped by her careless hand
toward a prismed hedge
Your Eve becomes mosaic
like the Garden tiles beneath her
and mysterious as
a hidden […]

Homing

Strange
how the conversation ended.
Some things perhaps
are better left unsaid
even for friends
whose friendship gives the lie
to most taboos.
The wedge between us
was an unhitched stone boat
empty of cargo whether
straw or rock
empty and silent in the field
nowhere to go.
I know our hearts aren’t
in the silence or the stone.
Our hearts are birds that know
each other’s nests.

A Whiter Shade of Pale

of a miller and a ghost conjured
in a dazed Procol Harum 60s anthem
I have heard countless times without ever
knowing how the lyrics defy interpretation

Dash 8

on this Dash 8 from Terrace to Vancouver
the flight attendant carries only baskets
of pretzels in pinched plastic bags
and with spite for the warning of Lot’s wife
I look, and like burst blood vessels,
the salt-stung memory seeps behind my eyes
while dark horses slip across the coral Caribbean
beach under a full moon like a Harlequin cover,
and I feel […]

Other

I understand that
quantum physics postulates
parallel universes –
Hundreds of them
so it seems
Worlds upon Worlds
where duplicates
of you
and of I
stroll or stumble
on other paths
to other destinations.
Incredible, don’t you think
that on some diverse plane
another you
and I
may speak with gentleness
unknown
in this domain
And that out there
another I writes some quite
different words
upon a blank sheet.
