We meet under the naked shade of plane trees,
February sun patterns lines across our faces
and hearth smoke lingers
clings to our sweaters as we leave the village.

Shadows of late afternoon,
closed sign in a shop window.
dusk drives out the light,
tamps the business,
sends the people home.
