February sun patterns lines across our faces
and hearth smoke lingers
clings to our sweaters as we leave the village.
We walk towards the Costabonne
while the Tech river whispers rumours behind us,

under callused inner knuckles.
You are a caresser of trees,
easing fruit from behind the dead leaves
of unnecessary branches.
By the clothesline, you pluck a small cherry,
